Your stay

Cycling from Bordeaux to Agen between vineyards and the Garonne Canal.

3 days of cycling between Bordeaux and Agen to discover the beautiful Entre-deux-Mers vineyards and the Garonne Canal, part of the famous Canal des Deux Mers linking the Atlantic to the Mediterranean sea with the Canal du Midi. From Bordeaux, the wine capital on the banks of the Garonne, you’ll reach the nearby Entre-Deux-Mers region. A very pleasant start to a hilly, bucolic landscape, yet easy to pedal along the Roger Lapébie cycle path, which follows the route of the old railroad line between Bordeaux and Sauveterre de Guyenne. A gentle stroll through vineyards and historic sites. You’ll discover the typical fortified towns of Créon and Sauveterre, and the Sauve Majeure abbey.

Your cycling trip will take you further along the Garonne valley to La Réole, then on to the Canal de Garonne. You’ll follow this former towpath, which has been converted into a paved, rolling greenway between century-old plane trees and the waterway. At the many locks (53 as far as Toulouse!) along the way, you’ll witness the ballet of barges and tourist boats as they travel up and down the canal to the peaceful rhythm of the vacation season.

Stop off at the towns and villages along the way. In Meilhan-sur-Garonne, visit the esplanade of Tertre with its exceptional panoramic view over the canal and the Garonne. Stop off at Mas d’Agenais, one of the oldest villages in the Lot-et-Garonne region, famous today for its collegiate church with its richly decorated furnishings, enhanced by the presence of the work of one of painting’s greatest geniuses, Rembrandt: “Christ on the Cross”, dated 1631. Further afield, Buzet sur Baïse, the crossroads of river tourism, also known for its famous wine. The “Cave des Vignerons de Buzet” is just 1 km from the canal!

End of our cycling trip in Agen. The arrival in the city is a memorable one, spanning the Garonne over the magnificent and impressive 500-metre-long canal bridge. Take advantage of the late afternoon to stroll through the narrow streets of the city center, with its 2,000 years of history.

You'll enjoy :

  • The rolling countryside of the Entre-Deux-Mers region, with its pretty bastides (fortified towns)
  • A pleasant cycle path between canal and century-old plane trees dotted with locks
  • Mas d’Agenais collegiate church and Buzet sur Baïse wine cellar
  • Agen’s Canal Bridge
  • Cosy nights in a guest house

Daily program

Day 1 - Arrival in Bordeaux, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Bed and Breakfast accommodation in *** hotels or charming B&Bs in the heart of Bordeaux. Handover of your bike, documentation on the region and a route booklet indicating your itinerary.

Bordeaux, the ancient Roman “Burdigala”, indissociable from its vineyards…shines brightly in its stone finery to dispense with artifice. The Garonne River, the heart of the city, welcomes walkers on its banks or for boat trips. Everyone can make the quays their own, in the hope of witnessing the stopover of a cruise liner, the “astonishing spectacle” of a giant of the seas in the heart of the city.

Day 2 - From Bordeaux to the Sauveterre area

This itinerary allows you to discover the Entre-deux-Mers region on 55 km of trails/greenways and small roads… A real treat!

You’ll leave Bordeaux on the track that runs alongside the Garonne and its marvellous quays, then follow the greenway that winds through the Entre-deux-Mers hills, passing through Créon and Sauveterre de Guyenne, both magnificent fortified bastides. Finally, you’ll make your way back to your accommodation on small roads through the vineyards.

Dinner, overnight stay and breakfast in a charming B&B.

Day 3 - From Sauveterre to Marmande

The greenway here is royal: it alternates between vineyards and small forests, and crosses several railway stations that have been converted into residential homes. Despite a few false flats, the trail is easy and offers a breath of fresh air. You’ll reach La Réole before cycling along the Canal de Garonne. On this stage, you can take advantage of the many stops on offer to cyclists, notably at Meilhan sur Garonne. The top of the village offers a remarkable view of the canal and the Garonne plain. At the end of the afternoon, you’ll be welcomed in a hotel in Marmande.

Overnight stay and breakfast.

Day 4 - Marmande to Agen

The tour continues through the rich Garonne valley and its orchards. This is a very pleasant itinerary, especially between Le Mas d’Agenais and its collegiate church, Buzet-sur-Baïse and its Wines cellars, and the nautical stopover at Sérignac, a haven of tranquillity on the banks of the canal. In the village, visitors will discover a 13th-century bastide and streets lined with cornices. Finally, you’ll reach Agen via its famous Canal Bridge, certainly one of the most beautiful and impressive engineering structures on this cycle route.

Night and breakfast in a 3-star hotel.

Day 5 - Departure
