Your stay

Free cycling in Champagne.

Discovering Champagne by bike is a journey rich in diversity. The entire region is marked by the omnipresence of vineyards and vineyard management. In the heart of the Coteaux, Maisons et Caves de Champagne, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the “Cultural Landscape” category, you’ll have the privilege of unlocking the secrets of the Champagne vineyards and their Grands Crus. Nature shimmers in the Marne Valley and the Montagne de Reims nature park . Champagne also boasts a fabulous religious heritage, with the Gothic Cathedral of Reims as its crowning glory. What’s more, on this bike tour, you’ll be criss-crossing the Champagne region on small country roads through vineyards, forests and canals.

Departing from Reims, a city that has celebrated the coronation of kings for over 1,000 years, and the capital of Champagne wines, you’ll reach Épernay, capital of the Champagne region. Home to some of the world’s most prestigious champagne houses (Moët and Chandon, Veuve-Clicquot, Pol Roger, Perrier-Jouët, Don Pérignon, Mercier…), the majestic Avenue de Champagne (also known as the “Champs Élysées of Champagne”) houses millions of bottles of this precious sparkling nectar that delights palates the world over. Stay for 3 nights and discover the charming villages and their architectural treasures.

Return to Reims after a final cycling stage through the Montagne de Reims Regional Nature Park. Along the way, meet winegrowers and winemakers who will tell you all about their work. Over a tasting session, you’ll learn all about the art of effervescence! Cuvée, grape varieties, chalk, vines, Blanc de blancs and Premier cru will have nothing to hide from you. In the Marne department, from Vitry to Reims, the Champagne vines will tell you everything!

You'll enjoy :

  • Reims, city of the coronation of the Kings of France and its UNESCO-listed cathedral
  • A prestigious, omnipresent vineyard, between the Marne valley and the Montagne de Reims
  • The great Champagne Houses and tasting invitations
  • Elegant country roads between meadows, forests and villages counted among the “most beautiful villages in France”.

Daily program

Day 1 - Arrival

Participants arrive in Reims on their own. Check-in at a 3* hotel in the city center. The hotel reception will give them their bikes, and the travel pack: itinerary and tourist information.

Day 2 - Reims - Matougues

After breakfast, departure via Sillery for Matougues, passing through the typical villages of the Montagne de Reims vineyards: Mailly Champagne, Verzenay, Bouzy, etc. Arrive in Matougues at the end of the day. Overnight at hotel

Day 3 - Matougues - Epernay

After breakfast, departure for Epernay – the capital of Champagne wines. A very easy stage along the Canal Latéral à la Marne. This short stage leaves plenty of time in the afternoon to explore the city’s cellars… Overnight at the hotel.

Day 4 - Epernay - Epernay

Cycle in the footsteps of Dom-Pérignon to Hautvillers. First your path winds through the vineyards leading to Hautvillers. The village of wrought-iron signs, its church, its Benedictine abbey and the tombstones of Dom-Perignon, who strongly influenced the development of the champagne we know today. Next, you’ll head for Cumières, perhaps to stop for lunch in a restaurant carved out of the chalk? Continuing on to Damery (with its 12th-13th century church) and back to Epernay on the other side of the Marne, via Boursault. You’ll discover a real countryside with gentle hills and changing skies: vineyards, pastures and forests, charming country villages, Romanesque bell towers, princely castles… You’ll marvel at this landscape. Overnight stay in Epernay.

Day 5 - Epernay - Epernay

Today, you’ll visit the vineyards of the Côte des Blancs, the birthplace of Chardonnay, with its famous villages built amphitheatrically into the hillsides. Around Mont Bernon, you’ll come back down to Pierry (with its 18th-century château, cellar and wine cellars, and 18th-century townhouses, including that of Jacques Cazotte, a man of letters who welcomed the most famous writers, philosophers and artists of his time to his home). Continue on to discover the 12th-century church of Chavot-Courcourt, the only island in a sea of vines. After Cuis and its beautiful Romanesque church, the trail takes you past cliffs to reach Cramant and its giant bottle (8.50 m), and not far from there, the small frescoed village of Avize. Then on to Oger, one of the “most beautiful villages in France”. Here, you can visit its “museum of traditions, love and Champagne”. Return to Epernay in the afternoon. Overnight in a hotel in Epernay.

Day 6 - Epernay - Reims

After breakfast, you’ll discover the Hautvillers state forest, passing through Avenay Val d’Or and Germaine before returning to Reims via Ludes. Overnight in Reims.

Day 7 - Departure
