Your stay

Cycling in the Dordogne and Lot et Garonne, from Agen to Sarlat. Discover the heart of south-west France!

You’ll start your cycling trip inAgen, prefecture of the Lot et Garonne and famous for its canal bridge (2nd longest in France) and its famous prunes. The landscape of this rural département is strongly influenced by agricultural activity. You’re immediately struck by the variety of landscapes created by the mosaic of crops: arable farming, market gardening, orchards, vineyards and meadows all combine to create remarkable, highly diversified landscapes. Your first few days on the bike will take you over gentle hills and fertile valleys, visiting pretty bastides and villages such as Penne d’Agenais, Biron, Molières and Monpazier. You’ll cross the Lot to stay in Villeneuve sur Lot.

The banks of the Dordogne then herald the entrance to Périgord Noir, one of the four entities of the Dordogne department, famous for its castles, medieval villages, prehistoric sites and landscapes. You’ll visit such must-sees as Beynac, La Roque Gageac or Domme… classified as France’s most beautiful villages. End your cycling tour in Sarlat La Canéda, a jewel of medieval art, known for having the highest density of listed historic monuments! Take time to stroll through its narrow streets and discover its markets. We recommend staying an extra night for a final cycling loop… aiming for Les Eyzies on the banks of the Vézère, the capital of prehistory. The place is, after all, linked to the discovery of Cro Magnon!

A bike tour in the Dordogne and Lot-et-Garonne regions promises a warm welcome to all lovers of green tourism. Don’t miss the chance to sample the region’s world-renowned dishes (truffles, ceps, foie gras and duck confit). You’ll be warmly welcomed every evening in charming***or **** hotels or bed & breakfasts.

You'll enjoy :

  • The green valleys and orchards of the Lot-et-Garonne region
  • The fortified towns of Monpazier and Monflanquin
  • The Dordogne valley and its most beautiful villages: La Roque Gageac, Domme, etc.
  • The medieval city of Sarlat, jewel of the Périgord Noir region
  • A trip back to prehistoric times at Eyzies de Tayac on the Vézère river

Daily program

Day 1 - Arrival in Agen

Arrive at your accommodation in Agen, where you will be welcomed in a 3-star hotel. We’ll provide you with documentation on the region and a road book indicating your route. This pretty town, capital of the prune, halfway between Bordeaux and Toulouse, offers a number of places to visit. With 2,000 years of history behind it, the town reveals its heritage through medieval alleyways and elegant 19th-century boulevards: the Musée des Beaux-arts presents five paintings by Goya (including the self-portrait), amidst other Spanish works from the 18th and 19th centuries. Its dynamic town center offers shops and services. Farmers’ markets showcase local produce: foie gras, fruit and vegetables, and of course, Agen prunes!

Bed and Breakfast in a *** hotel with breakfast.

Day 2 - The Lot Valley

Your cycling holiday in Aquitaine takes you from Agen to the medieval bastide town of Villeneuve sur Lot, along pretty country roads. Take the time to visit the Foie Gras Museum and discover all the secrets of its manufacture! Many farms welcome you to the region. The road then takes you to Penne d’Agenais, one of France’s most beautiful villages.

Villeneuve-sur-Lot is a charming bastide town in the Lot-et-Garonne region, founded on both banks of the Lot between 1251 and 1264, under a deed of parage between Alphonse de Poitiers, representative of the King of France, and the powerful Benedictine abbey of Eysses. One of the largest and most powerful bastides in the South-West, Villeneuve-sur-Lot boasts a rich heritage to discover: Place Lafayette and its covered market, the Pujols and Paris towers, 17th and 18th century half-timbered houses, the Cieutat bridge…

Day 3 - Lot et Garonne and Dordogne

This cycling stage continues on to Monflanquin, a bastide classified as “France’s most beautiful village”! Cycling through woods and forests, you’ll reach the Gavaudun fortress, the border between Périgord and Agenais. Take the time to visit it, then head for Biron, where a fortified castle awaits you! Enjoy a pleasant end to the stage in a Périgord landscape of chestnut, oak and hornbeam forests, ochre-tinted stone walls…and reach the remarkable medieval bastide town of Monpazier, another village classified as “most beautiful in France”.

The bastide town of Monpazier is the best-preserved bastide in Périgord, with 32 listed monuments. It is considered the most beautiful and the “model” bastide among the 300 bastides in the southwest. Created in 1284, under the reign of King Edward 1st of England, it is an authentic jewel of medieval architecture, classified as a Grand Site National since 1991.

Day 4 - The Bastides of Périgord

Your bike tour this time takes you along the Périgord “route des bastides”. Leaving from Monpazier, you’ll discover 13th-century English bastides and remarkable religious buildings. Take time to admire the Cadouin cloister, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You’ll end your tour in Périgord Noir, the Dordogne’s most famous and touristic region.

The “Périgord Noir” appellation refers to the high density of evergreen oaks, with their dense, dark, evergreen foliage. This is the oldest appellation. Along with “green”, “white” and “purple” Périgord, it is one of the four entities of this tourist region. It is famous for its castles, prehistoric sites, medieval villages and landscapes.

You’ll finish your cycling tour in the gastronomic capital of Périgord Noir, where you’ll enjoy regional cuisine including foie gras, truffles and duck…

Sarlat is one of the jewels in the crown of the Périgord Noir region, a town that has preserved the traces of its history. It owes its renown to its rich architectural heritage. Its winding streets, vaulted passageways, cathedral and 15th- and 16th-century mansions will amaze you. The medieval city is also renowned for having the highest density of listed historic monuments in the world.

After this escapade, you can enjoy a final night in Sarlat, the emblematic town of Périgord.

“Les Eyzies is the birthplace of prehistory as a science, illustrated by the names of Peyrony, Lartet, Capitan, Abbés Breuil and Glory; it was here that Cro-Magnon Man was discovered; and it is here that the world’s wonders of cave art can be found. Discover an exceptional concentration of prehistoric sites, most of them UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Meet Homo sapiens, and discover the remains of his habitat, his daily activities and his art.
