Calvados by bike from Bayeux to Honfleur in the heart of Normandy

From the D-Day beaches to the Côte Fleurie, cycle through Calvados from west to east, from Bayeux to Honfleur. A cycling journey through French history, from William the Conqueror to D-Day in 1944. What a program! Cycle through postcard-perfect Normandy scenery, such as the Pays d’Auge, the wild dunes, the beaches of Deauville and the picturesque port of Honfleur, birthplace of Impressionism.

Two nights in Bayeux will allow you to enjoy its medieval historic center, spared from the bombardments, and its cathedral. Don’t miss a visit to the Tapestry evoking the epic story of William the Conqueror. Then head for the landing beaches of Omaha, Juno and the charming valleys of the Aure and Seulles rivers.

Discover Caen, the historic capital with the castle of William the Conqueror (still him!), then head for the most popular seaside resorts on the Normandy coast. Cabourg and Deauville. surrounded by fine sandy beaches, wild dunes and sumptuous Belle Époque villas!

Cycling stages interspersed with escapades in the Normandy countryside. You’ll cross the typically Norman Pays d’Auge, with its 1,000 horses, cows and apple trees. Enjoy stops in the charming villages of the hinterland and sample the local gastronomy: andouillette, cheese and, of course, cider.

End of the cycling trip in Calvados along the Côte Fleurie and last night in Honfleur, a veritable jewel on the Seine estuary and a major tourist attraction in Normandy. This town of Art and History inspired the precursors of Impressionist painting, notably Monet. You’ll be charmed by its picturesque narrow streets and restaurant-lined Vieux-Bassin.

You'll enjoy :

  • The Bayeux Tapestry, the first comic strip about the Norman conquest of England.
  • Quiet little roads along the coast and dunes and in the hinterland
  • The seaside resorts of Cabourg or Deauville and their sumptuous villas
  • The Pays d’Auge and its terroir: cheeses (Livarot, Pont l’Evèque, Camembert), cider and …Calvados
  • The picturesque fishing port of Honfleur painted by Claude Monet, Eugène Boudin…

Daily program

Day 1 - Arrival in Bayeux

Bayeux, one of the first French towns to be liberated by the Allies, on June 7, 1944! Having escaped the bombardments, it’s one of the few towns in the area to retain monuments dating back to the Middle Ages.

Allow yourself some time to visit: the Tapestry recounting William the Conqueror’s epic journey to England in 1066, the Cathedral erected in William’s honor and the old buildings in the historic center…

For those with a sweet tooth, the city is full of excellent restaurants. On arrival at the hotel, you’ll receive a document listing our recommendations.

Day 2 - Loop to the landing beaches

Leaving Bayeux, you pass the Battle of Normandy Museum and the British Cemetery. You then cross the Bessin countryside. You reach the coast at Colleville-sur-Mer. Since 1956, this village at the eastern end of Omaha Beach has been home to the bodies of 9,387 soldiers buried in the American Cemetery.

After your visit, you drive along the Omaha beaches to the west before returning to Bayeux. The longest option takes you to the Pointe du Hoc.

Overnight in Bayeux.

Day 3 - from Bayeaux to Caen / Benouville

Follow the Aure valley towards the sea and reach the German battery at Longues-sur-Mer, the only one to still have firing guns. After your visit, head east along the coast to Gold Beach. Between Arromanches and Ver-sur-Mer, you can see the huge concrete containers still visible on the beach, the ruins of the “Mulberry” artificial harbour. Continue eastwards to Juno beach, the Canadian sector.

After a break in the fishing port of Courseulles, you leave the coast and follow the Seulles Valley to Caen.

Night in Caen. (Comfort package: gourmet dinner included)

Day 4 - from Caen / Benouville to Cabourg

If you’re leaving from Caen, start by following the Orne canal to the Bénouville bridge – Pegasus bridge – which you’ll cross. This was one of the most strategic landing points and was liberated by a British parachute commando early on the night of June 6. You then pass through Ranville, the first French village to be liberated. You then head up towards the coast, passing through Merville. The German battery erected there is still in very good condition. The day ends with a drive along the coast to Cabourg.

Overnight in Cabourg.

Day 5 - from Cabourg to Honfleur

Located on the Dives estuary, Cabourg is a popular seaside resort renowned for its 4 km of fine sandy beaches and the Belle-Epoque atmosphere made famous by a certain Marcel Proust. The villas of the Parisian haute-bourgeoisie and aristocracy of the early 20th century add to the charm of the small town, which is organized around the Casino and the famous Grand Hôtel.

As you leave the coast, you enter the Pays d’Auge, otherwise known as the postcard of Normandy. After passing three hundred horses, two thousand cows and just as many apple trees, you’ll reach the village of Beaumont. This is an ideal spot for a lunch break, where you can enjoy the local delicacies: andouillette and cheese, washed down with good cider!

From Beaumont, you have 2 options: reach Deauville before heading back to Honfleur, or cross the Saint Gatien woods.

Honfleur is a jewel of art and history. This small fishing port is located south of the Seine estuary. The town welcomed and inspired the precursors of Impressionist painting: Eugène Boudin, Johan Barthold Jongkind and, above all, Claude Monet!

The town has preserved many of its monuments from its rich past. A real gem!

Overnight in Honfleur.
