Burgundy vineyards and canals by bike. Cycling holidays in Côte d’Or

This cycling trip through the vineyards and canals of Burgundy is an opportunity to discover a large part of the Côte d’Or, a region with a unique cultural landscape. The program includes the Burgundy Grands Crus route. No cycling vacation in Burgundy is complete without a trip along this world-renowned ribbon of land between Dijon and Chagny. Each of the region’s wine-growing terroirs is referred to in Burgundian termsas “le climat“, with some answering to illustrious names such as Chambertin, Romanée-Conti, Clos de Vougeot, Montrachet, Corton, Musigny… A journey through the Côtes de Beaune and Côtes de Nuits, in the heart of a winegrowing landscape shaped by man, of extreme refinement and exceptional architectural monuments such as the Hospices de Beaune in Beaune, Palais des ducs de Bourgogne in Dijon, Château du Clos de Vougeot… All of which justly deserves its place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Your bike rides will also take you into the hinterland on pleasant country roads and greenways along the Canal du Centre linking the Saône and Loire valleys, and the Canal de Bourgogne linking the Yonne to the Saône in the Ouche valley. You’ll discover the town of Nolay at the gateway to the Morvan, a typical Hautes-Côtes de Beaune town nestled in a charming valley between vineyards and cliffs. Its charming medieval architecture and exceptional market halls bear witness to a long trading tradition. Further north, Châteauneuf en Auxois. Perched on a rocky spur, its medieval village and imposing fortress make it one of the most beautiful sights in the region!

You'll enjoy :

  • Peaceful routes through vineyards and along canals
  • UNESCO-listed wine-growing landscapes
  • The hinterland of medieval traces, between green valleys and forests
  • Châteauneuf en Auxois and its fortress perched on a rocky outcrop
  • Local gastronomy in one of Dijon or Beaune’s many gourmet restaurants

Daily program

Day 1 - Arrival in Beaune (possibility of doing the loop from Dijon instead of Beaune)

Beaune, capital of Burgundy wines and residence of the Dukes of Burgundy until the 14th century! The heart of the town is still surrounded by ramparts built in the 15th century. You can visit the town on foot. Don’t miss: the old hospices, the wine museum and the old cellars.

Your hotel is ideally located in the historic heart of the city. In your logbook, you’ll find our suggestions for good restaurants and wine bars.

Day 2 - From Beaune to Nolay/Chassey

Today’s route allows you to leave Beaune a little later if you wish. Today we’re heading south! You’ll cross the Côtes de Beaune and its Grand Cru Chardonnay vineyards before reaching the Canal du Centre, which makes its way through the “hinterland” in the fractured limestone plateau. Depending on the type of accommodation you choose, you’ll stay either in Nolay or Chassey le Camp.

Day 3 - from Nolay / Chassey to Châteauneuf / Vandenesse

You penetrate a little further into the hinterland, leaving the vineyards for a moment to climb gently to the plateau overlooking Nolay. Your effort is rewarded by a superb panorama and the crossing of wide open spaces and deciduous forests. On your way you’ll come across the Château de Corabeuf and the Roman column at Cussy, then the village of Bligny-sur-Ouche, ideal for a short break. The baker still bakes his bread here over a wood fire, and the market is a real event!

You then descend the Ouche valley to the Burgundy canal, which you follow to Châteauneuf or Vandenesse, depending on your chosen accommodation.

Day 4 - from Châteauneuf / Vandenesse to Dijon

Leave Chateauneuf and cross the Bouhey forest to reach the Burgundy canal, which you follow all the way to Dijon. A deliberately easy stage for visiting Dijon, its historic center, the Dukes’ Palace… The city also boasts some excellent restaurants.

Your hotel is centrally located, so you can explore the city on foot.

Day 5 - from Dijon to Beaune

For this final leg, you return to Beaune, this time crossing the vineyards of the Côtes de Nuits on the route des grands-Crus: Vosne-Romané, Chambolle-Musigny and Gevrey-Chambertin. After a break in Nuits-Saint-Georges, continue south through Aloxe Corton.
