Tour du Golfe du Morbihan by bike

From Vannes, set off on a cycling loop to discover the Golfe du Morbihan. Bicycle tours in Brittany between land, sea, islands and peninsulas.

Renowned for its beautiful coastal scenery and mild climate, the Golfe du Morbihan is the ideal place for a relaxing yet active vacation. From peninsula to island, you’ll cycle along the shores of this small inland sea* to complete your tour (*Morbihan, meaning “little sea” in Breton). From land or sea, you’ll appreciate the geographical, historical and ornithological riches of this unique area.

Rhythmed by the gentle lapping of the sea, this bicycle tour lets you meet locals who know their territory inside out. Fishermen, shellfish farmers, oyster growers – they’re passionate about sharing their knowledge and expertise of the Gulf of Morbihan with you.

Departing from the City of Art and History of Vannes, you embark on a trip that combines cycling and boating. Almost every day, a “passeur”, a small boat from the Gulf of Morbihan, will take you to the maritime junctions between the peninsulas and the islands. Cruises lasting from 5 to 30 minutes give you another glimpse of Morbihan’s inland coastline and a breath of fresh sea air. Restful and charming, l’île aux Moines and l’île d’Arz are on the itinerary. The perfect island getaways.

Along the way, you’ll also discover the rich historical heritage of Morbihan. A highlight of the adventure is a visit to the Carnac alignments. Proof, if any were needed, that you’ve chosen a land of choice, nurtured by man for thousands of years. Nestled in the heart of the Auray river, the port of Saint Goustan is also a must-see. With its cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses, the port has retained its charm of yesteryear.

You'll enjoy :

  • The fortified city of Vannes opens onto the gulf
  • The many small ferry crossings, part of the Gulf’s heritage
  • L’Île aux Moines and l’île d’Arz
  • The picturesque port of Saint Goustan in Auray
  • The megalithic alignments of Carnac, 5000 years old

Daily program

Day 1 - Home in Vannes

Free arrival in Vannes. Check-in at your hotel

Day 2 - From Vannes to Ile d'Arz

Welcome and meeting with our guide at 8 or 9 am at your accommodation. You’ll reach the pier about 3km away, where you’ll leave the beautiful city of Vannes by boat for the Ile d’Arz.

Free bike ride on this small island. Overnight on the port of Ile d’Arz (return and overnight in Vannes if no availability in Arz).

Day 3 - From Ile d'Arz to Arzon - 45 km

The first boat takes you to the Séné peninsula. A few kilometers of cruising at the bottom of the Gulf, surrounded by birds. A ferry then takes you to the Rhuys peninsula. You follow the southern shores of the Petite Mer to reach Arzon. In between, the Château de Suscinio and the small village of Sarzeau enhance this pretty route of small roads and greenways.

Day 4 - Day trip to Île aux Moines AUX MOINES - 20 km (12 km by boat)

A 3km bike ride takes you to the landing stage for Ile aux Moines (departure at 9 or 10 a.m. depending on the season).

The ferryman takes you to Ile aux Moines for this island day. A pleasant discovery of the island on the small car-free roads of this little paradise. Free cycling on this small island.

Return at the end of the day (5pm)

Day 5 - From Arzon to Carnac

You take a ferry back across the waters of the Gulf. Head for the north shore to discover other Morbihan treasures. This is the perfect opportunity to discover the Menhir alignments, vestiges of ancient times at Carnac. Overnight at the port of La Trinité (or Carnac if more available).

Day 6 - From Carnac to Auray

You’ll leave the Gulf of Morbihan behind to reach the Ria d’Etel. A famous and beautiful river to discover. By bike, you’ll reach the island of Saint-Cado, a car-free haven of peace linked by a small dike. Then you’re off to Auray. The town has a charming historic center. But it’s on the banks of the river of the same name that you’ll find the most interesting place: the port of Saint-Goustan. Overnight on the port.

Day 7 - From Auray to Vannes

Once again, you approach the Gulf and this beautiful inland sea to return to the ramparts of Vannes. A final picnic on the edge of this incredible site.
